Here’s something I read and thought was absolutely crazy! According to a National Geographic Society study (as reported in November 2002 by CNN), “Young Americans may soon have to fight a war in Iraq, but most of them can’t even find that country on a map.” Only 13% (roughly 1 in 7) of those aged 18 to 24 could!
And in more recent news this year, another startling stat was pulled out like a rabbit from a magician’s hat at the Miss Teen USA 2007 competition. (The now-infamous clip of Miss Teen South Carolina can be found on YouTube. Her answer of why 1/5 of Americans can’t locate the United States on a map is a comical train wreck.)
