National Cake Decorating Day - This is a holiday I can really relate to. Cake decorating is such a fun and therapeutic way for me to be creative with my time. I’ve always had a knack for baking. Since my mom is a master baker, there was really no surprise when I began baking at the age of 6 with my Easy Bake Oven. Man, that was the greatest gift I ever received till this day. I was first introduced to cake decorating a few years back when I religiously watched this cake decorating show on the Food Network. This got me really interested and I began studying the art of cake decorating. I bought some books, read how-to articles online and practiced, practiced, practiced. My next step - taking a cake decorating class. They teach you so much more tricks and tips. I haven’t baked in a while so today I think I’m going to bake a cake and decorate it using fall colored frosting - chocolate and orange. I encourage you to do the same. Or…if you’re far from creative, then allow Davids Cookies to help you out. National Angel Food Cake Day - I know today’s holidays seem a little similar; however, it might just help you gain the confidence to try it out for yourself. Having made angel food cake before, I’m not going to pretend it’s not hard, because it is. It requires tons of preparation, a watchful eye and many ingredients. This is a heavy-duty recipe. To make a light and airy angel food cake, you require 16 egg whites (I told you it was a big recipe) and many other fancy shmancy ingredients like cream of tartar and pastry flour. Don’t be intimidated. If you really want to serve this up to guests and friends over the weekend, make it yourself. A store bought one doesn’t taste the same. Another important element of making this cake the traditional way is baking it in a specific cake pan - normally called a tube pan. It looks like a regular bundt pan, except the sides are a little higher up because the cake does rise quite a bit. If you don’t have one of these pans or are in need of a new mixer, take my advice and check out Overstock. Save $5 on discount bakeware, tube pans and mixers on orders of $100 or more when you use Overstock coupons.
