December 19th – It was on this day in history in 1917 that the first NHL game was played on artificial ice in Toronto, Canada. In a previous blog I mentioned that I tried playing basketball in high school. Well, I also tried playing ice hockey. It had to be the funniest thing I’d ever seen, watching myself on the video my coach made! I had a great time laughing at myself. I’m already not the greatest skater, but add on a few pounds of bulky hockey equipment, a helmet that swiveled so much I looked like a bobble head, and thick gloves that made it impossible for me to hold the stick correctly, and you’ve got comedy on ice! I’m not afraid to say that I’m possibly the worst hockey player there is. Half the game was spent picking myself up from falling. So, I have to give hockey players some well-deserved credit. They’ve got to balance themselves on ice, make quick passes, skate backwards, and of course try scoring. After playing hockey in high school, I developed a new-found respect for all hockey players.
