A WAHM Gets Her House in Order – Guest Post from Erin of Today’s Mama

Is cutting costs in your budget a little overwhelming? It is for me since I have no idea where to start! That’s why I’m really thankful to WAHM bloggers like Erin of TodaysMama.com. Here she is, offering some of her best tips on staying within a budget without settling for things:

My path to frugality has been rocky. I took a 60% pay cut to work from home, so there were SERIOUS adjustments to be made to our expenses! I stumbled through this adjustment but now our household budget works like clockwork. Here is what I learned…

Get cozy with your bad spending habits.

Know what triggers unplanned spending so you can identify the beginning of your spending meltdown and change course. I solved bad days with a trip to the MAC counter, because the secret to improving a bad day? Iridescent green eye shadow! Oh, wait…no it isn’t. See what I mean?

Decide what indulgences are worth the money.

I tried to say, “No more eating out!” It didn’t work–after 3 solid weeks of eating at home I was burned out, and ended up with an unexpectedly barren fridge and pantry which resulted in eating take-out for 5 days straight. Now our household budget allows for a nice dinner once a month. We enjoy the outing because it is a planned indulgence rather than a spur of the moment expense.

Tame the grocery beast!

Poor planning meant that we ate a lot of fast food or wasted money on ingredients that spoiled before they could be finished. Here is how I wrestled the grocery beast to the ground:

Plan your meals: This intimidated me. I thought it would take forever but I found a rhythm and picking meals is now a quick process.
Let your list build: I usually mull over my shopping list for a few days. Why? Because I…
Commit to only shopping once a week: This helps me maximize my purchases AND my eating. I’m less likely to eat that whole brick of cheese if I know it needs to last through Taco Thursday.
Get the hang of shopping a warehouse store. Buy your staple items in bulk once a month to save a bundle! If you’re not super familiar with the items available at the warehouse store in your area, go on a “scouting trip” and make note of the items they have. Then you can split your list and know what you’ll still need to pick up weekly at the corner market.

Know your needs and know what deals to look for.

Sounds obvious, yes? But it’s not always easy to implement. What good is a great coupon if you don’t take advantage of it? By planning ahead (grocery needs, indulgences, holiday/birthday shopping) you’ll be better prepared to take advantage of sales and coupons when you see them.

Click “YES” whenever you can!

Most people are looking for ways to eliminate spam but I’ve found that some of the best deals I’ve received have been included in e-newsletters from online retailers and services. Get a free Google Mail account if you don’t want this info to clutter your personal email and then make a habit of checking it several times each week. Those newsletters are money in the bank!

February 4th – This Day in History – Get a grip! Shop at Teva for sports and casual shoes offering supreme traction and enjoy free shipping.

Coupons featured in this post:

February 4th – It was on this day in history in 1824 that J.W. Goodrich introduced rubber galoshes to the public. These maximum-grip shoes made walking on slippery surface easier; however, they weren’t the most stylish shoes out there. Today, some shoes have built-in rubber surfaces to help provide better grip so that people don’t have to sacrifice style for performance. For running or hiking shoes that provide the ultimate grip and traction, I suggest you shop at Teva. Discover the ultimate sport-oriented and casual shoes that provide grip, traction and most of all supreme comfort. Shop with free Teva coupons and get free shipping on orders of $75 or more.

1931 – National League Adopts a “Deader” Baseball – Um, “deader” eh? Hmm. This seems like a weird terminology. How much more dead can dead get? I get it though; the ball is even heavier, slower when thrown. Still, what a morbid name for sports equipment. Well, let’s move on to a happier tone then, shall we? How about the words: a grand-slam of savings at Baseball Express! Seriously, hit the home run of online stores for brand-name baseball equipment today. Save big at the Clearance Center with free Baseball Express coupons.

Famous Birthday

Rosa Parks – She is the woman who asserted her human rights by not giving up her seat on the bus. She’s admired by so many people for beginning a movement that changed history. Her birthday falls within the month that celebrates African American History. So, for more amazing and heroic stories about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and other historical figures, head over to Footnote. Discover tons of literature, articles and speeches to get inspired this month. Plus, get a free trial by redeeming free Footnote coupons from FabulousSavings.

Thank a Mailman Day – If it wasn’t for the mailman, how would you ever receive your mail, bills and cards? Umm…if they could only “forget” the bills for once that would make us like them MORE! Thank a Mailman Day is a great day to surprise your mailman or woman with a special treat waiting for them on the porch. When it’s blistering hot in the summertime, we usually offer the mailman a cold bottle of water and one for the road.
