How to Make Money with Consignment Shops

Every season, I go through my closets and drawers and pick out what I didn’t wear much this year. I then proceed to donate them to a used-clothing store or charity. One day, after consulting my better half Monika, she was shocked I hadn’t considered selling clothes to a consignment store before.

Tips on Selling Clothes at Consignment Stores

Tip #1 – Do your research

My friend had gone tons of times so I kind of had an advantage. Yet I still did my research. I scoped out some consignment stores online and learned about their policies and what brands and items were in demand. There are consignment shops that cater to different age groups. The one I went to was mainly for teens and young adults and sought brands like Abercrombie & Fitch and Guess.

Tip #2 – Go through your closets

Now it’s time to go through your closets and drawers and pick out pieces that are in pretty good condition, meaning no holes, rips, tears or permanent stains. This is why research is important. Now you can go through your closet and pick out any of the brands you may have that the shop is looking for and donate the rest to charity.

Tip #3 – Wash!

Imagine you had your own business and are trying to sell a product. You would want your product to look as clean and great as possible. This is the same attitude to have with the clothes you bring in. Wash everything, iron (if necessary), cut off any loose strings and fold neatly!

Tip #4 – Presentation

These are clothes you’ve had great times with, right? Well it’s only fitting you make them look presentable when sending them off to their final destination. Most consignment shops won’t accept anything thrown in garbage bags. Pile your neatly folded clothes in shopping bags.

Tip #5 – Be reasonable

It’s best not to get your hopes up too high. Don’t walk into the consignment store demanding to get everything you paid for the item back into your pocket. Be confident with the stuff you have and accept anything the cashier gives you. And don’t be disappointed if some of the items aren’t taken. We save them for the next time, and they’ve taken the items the second time around. So it might also depend on the cashier you get.
