I don’t know about you, but shopping vintage is my most favorite thing to do. Not only because you can get loads of clothes for a very low price, but because it’s a treasure hunt! Plus, you learn how to dress modern vintage with every visit. You can find some great designer items plus put together outfits you know no one else will have.
Yes, when you’re buying vintage you’re already being frugal, but I wanna get fabulously frugal. Thank goodness for Melanie from Common Cloth. She has some serious tips on how to be frugal and fun when you shop vintage clothes.
Take a look at some of Melanie’s tips on how to shop vintage and save:
Buying Vintage Silver Jewelry
You can usually find unique silver jewelry at vintage shops and thrift stores for a really low price. And the fun part is sprucing your outfits up with unique jewelry which gives ensembles more value than other beaded or plastic pieces. Usually all you need to make old jewelry pop is a little silver polish. This is exactly how to make the most of shopping vintage.
Buying Shoes
You can always find a cute pair of Mary Janes for less or distressed-looking boots that take your ensemble up a notch. Not sure about longevity? Take your new pair to a local shoemaker and have the heel or sole changed. A little love goes a long way!
Buying Vintage Denim
Whether you’re looking for skinny jeans, distressed jeans, dark jeans or more, a vintage store is where you’ll have tons of choices to shop vintage clothes and denim. Plus, older denim usually has more durability and lasts longer – get more and pay less. I like the sound of that.
Buying Leather
Leather lesson #1: leather gets better with age. The more leather is worn and ages, the more interest and texture it gains, giving it an edgy rock-and-roll appearance. Leather jackets in blacks or brown are usually in abundance at most vintage stores, and they’re always in style.
Buying Out of Season
When you’re looking for a warm winter coat, shop at a vintage shop in the summer time. And for cute floral dresses in spring, shop during the fall or winter. Just like other retail stores, merchandise costs rise with the season, so be frugal and shop out of season. You’ll be the first one to look cute when winter rolls around!
Learning how to dress modern vintage and save even more on already-great deals has been fun! Again, a special thanks to Melanie for her generous tips on how to shop vintage.
