Travel Advice for USA Trips & Vacations

Yesterday we featured Frugal Tips for Cheap Travel Overseas, and today we have Karina’s second post on frugal travel within the States. Enjoy! Shayna

Yesterday, I discussed tips for cheap travel overseas. Today, I’ll turn my attention to travel advice for USA trips.

I can’t last a year without going on a major trip. But sometimes you just can’t afford to travel far or for an extended period of time. My frugal travel solution? Take shorter vacations to closer destinations. Plus, if you go on a three- or four- day “long weekend” type of holiday, you’ll only have to sacrifice one or two days of vacation leave!

Consider Flying

You may be surprised, but flying is oftentimes the best US discount travel option for a short, cheap vacation. This is especially true if you’re only going away for 3 days. Why spend half the time driving, when you can get there by plane in an hour or two?

If you do your research, flying may cost less than other transportation options. My advice? Avoid the major airlines, and give the little guys a try for discount air travel in USA. My favorite is JetBlue. I find myself always coming back to give them business because I just can’t say no to ridiculously cheap flights. You can usually get a good deal on discount air travel within the US.

The Transit System Is Your Best Friend

Traveling on a budget to a large city? Ditch the cab and go for the subway. All transit systems offer unlimited travel passes for a fixed period of time, from one-day, two-day, to weeklong. So for one low fee, you can travel to pretty much anywhere in the city.

Go for the Lowest Hotel Rate

Hotel rates can vary drastically. The most expensive rates usually apply to hotels in the city core, while the cheaper rates are reserved for accommodations in the suburbs. The frugal side of me refuses to book a $200+ hotel in the city when I can get a $50-$100 motel by the airport.

Why the airport?

  1. Airport Shuttle – any hotel that I book must offer free 24-hour airport shuttle service
  2. Transit System connecting the Airport to the City – I always check to see if the city’s transit system connects directly to the airport

This way it costs me no more than the one-time transit fee to get to/from the hotel and the city. And if you use Orbitz coupons, you can save 10% off the already low-priced motel rate!

CityPasses Are Your Guide to Fun

From museums to art galleries to boat rides to observation decks, a CityPass is your key to doing all those things for one low fee. And consider buying it in advance with Viator coupons for US travel deals – you’ll save 7% on the CityPass and many other attractions!

Bon voyage! - Karina
