Stop Paying Full Price – Guest Post by Fantabulously Frugal

Today’s guest post comes from Fantabulously Frugal, a guide to deals, steals, coupons and bargains to save money while having fun. And it’s a great one too – it’s got tips and tricks to finding discounts you might otherwise not know about. Enjoy! -Fiona

When I first really got into turning to the internet to search for deals, freebies, and ways to save money in general, one of the first things I read was, “Don’t ever pay another dime for a magazine subscription!”  At one point or another, you can find almost any magazine for free.  (And this is true.  You shouldn’t pay for magazine subscriptions!)  But I soon took that tidbit of advice and twisted it a bit to read as follows: “Don’t ever pay full price for an item you buy online.”

Here’s the thing – when you shop online, there is less overhead for companies.  Companies don’t have to deal with leasing retail space, or hundreds of employees.  This means, ultimately, more savings for us.

If there’s something you just have to have from some online retailer, wait a few days.  Sure, you might risk the item selling out, but honestly, this has never happened to me (and I do a LOT of online shopping).  If a few days goes by and your item isn’t on sale, here’s my biggest tip for saving money on your purchase: Sign up for the company’s email list.  9 times out of 10 they will send you a welcome email that will contain a promotional code that will save you some money on your first purchase.

Some of the best deals I’ve found doing this?

C & C California is a maker of high-end T-shirts and they offer 30% off your purchase when you sign up for their email list.
Bed, Bath, and Beyond always has 20% off coupons, but if you need one in a pinch, sign up for their list and they’ll quickly send you 20% off!
Even the Gap will send you a coupon code as soon as you give them your email address – right now the coupon is for $15 off a $75 purchase, which isn’t too shabby.

And don’t think retailers are the only types of stores to offer these sorts of discounts – If you join the Ben & Jerry’s Email List they’ll email you a coupon for a free scoop at your local Ben & Jerry’s store!

I know what you could be thinking now: Won’t I get hit with tons of spam as soon as I sign up for those email lists?  In short – No!  I have an email account used specifically for getting onto email lists and I get MAYBE 1 spam email per day.  Still worried?  Do what I did and set up a quick second email address.

There are so many different ways to save money through online retailers at this point.  So please, whatever you do  – do not EVER pay full price for items online.  (And don’t forget – stop paying for those magazines, too!)
