History
Although Sears Holdings Corp.’s history began in 2005, the company draws from many years of experience in the industry. The company was formed when two powerhouses, Kmart and Sears, Roebuck and Company, decided to merge.
Kmart was founded by Sebastian S. Kresge in 1899. Aspects of the company remain famous today. The Blue Light Special was created in 1965 by a store manager to offer discounts on the store’s merchandise. And the phrase “attention Kmart shoppers” has also been made famous by the store.
Sears, Roebuck and Company began in 1886 through an ingenious marketing idea from Richard Warren Sears. He developed a catalog that allowed farmers to buy supplies without going to expensive local general stores.
Today, both Sears and Kmart locations still exist around the world. And Hoffman Estates, Illinois (Sears’ original headquarters) remains the location of the head office of Sears Holdings Corp.

Sears Holdings Corp. operates 3,800 locations worldwide. These retail locations include Sears, Sears Canada, Kmart, Big Kmart, Super Kmart, Orchard Supply Hardware, Lands’ End and The Great Indoors.
Charities
Sears Holdings Corp. gives back to their communities in several ways:
- Heroes at Home - Partnered with Rebuilding Together, Sears Holdings Corp. provides financial and physical assistance to military families.
- Kmart for Kids - Sears Holdings Corp. started this foundation in 1984 and raised over $70 million to provide health resources to children.
